Training Coordination Center

TITLE:  Big Data U: Empowering Modern Biomedicine via Personalized Training

Institution: University of Southern California

Principal Investigator: VAN HORN, JOHN DARRELL

Application/Grant #: 1 U24 ES 026465

The NIH’s Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Training Consortium is expected to empower current and future generations of researchers with a comprehensive understanding of the data science ecosystem and the ability to explore, prepare, analyze, visualize, and interpret Big Data.  The role of the Training Coordination Center (TCC) is to narrow the gap between the availability of biomedical Big Data and the ability of biomedical scientists to effectively utilize such data accurately, effectively, and efficiently.

The primary role of the TCC is to coordinate across the BD2K Training Consortium to enable the exchange of ideas and best practices about training in the data sciences, both within the BD2K Training Consortium and in the broader biomedical research community.  The TCC is developing a network of data scientists by sponsoring workshops, engaging the public through outreach, and facilitating scientific rotations.  Through creating professional public service announcements, it will communicate the impact of Big Data on biomedical science.

In addition to coordinating Big Data training activities, the TCC is developing tools to enable the discovery of educational resources for biomedical Big Data. Notably, the project is developing software to harvest the web to automatically identify, model, and incorporate online resources into an Educational Resource Discovery Index (ERuDIte).  The online resources will be organized by a “Big Data U” Knowledge Map – a representation that shows how data science concepts relate to one another – which can form the basis of a personalized learning system.  The presentation of the resources is planned to be personalized through crowdsourcing and the application of data science.
