#MentorMonday: Dylan Klomparens

Software Architect
All of Us Research Program

Two Civic Digital Fellows are contributing to the All of Us Research Program by exploring the use of Apache NiFi for data linkages. The goal is to realize an ability to perform “extract, transform, and load” (ETL) of data at scale. The fellows are also exploring the development and integration of the FHIR standard into NiFi in order to easily move health research data that is FHIR compatible.

It’s a win-win for everyone.

I decided to take on fellows because it returns value to the public through education and career advancement for the fellows. Everyone benefits with advances in public health and it’s valuable to devote time and effort to fostering this growth in the public health industry. Furthermore, folks who are at the beginning of their career bring fresh perspective and new ideas from academia that strengthen the industry. It’s a win-win for everyone.

Opening more opportunity.

My hope is that the fellows can make a significant contribution to the open source software community by combining the FHIR standard with a powerful data-wrangling tool: Apache NiFi. In the best case, this will open more opportunity and add value to many NIH initiatives. I also hope that the public and private industry can benefit from the open source contribution to the NiFi developer community through improved data management software.

Dylan is mentoring Alyssa Romanos and Aviva Weinbaum this fall.
